7 Subjects Schools Don’t Teach That The Real World Tests
For most people reading this, you didn’t have to decide to go to school. You grew up in school. You knew yourself going to school.
The school system has become an integral part of our society. Most of us had no idea what the real world was really like until we left school. This is because all we ever knew was school days, weekends and holidays. And this is what conditions our minds for employee life.
School gives us basic education and later prepares us for a job. But the reality of the real world just sits in one corner smiling. Today, a good number of people are not working with what they studied in school. And a lot of people are smacked in the face with problems they never knew they could have.
In many cases, those problems are things that should be taught in school. But for one reason or the other, schools don’t teach it. They just expect that you magically learn it. And most people learn by trial and error.
I agree that life will re-teach some things regardless of what school does. But school should at least do something to lay the groundwork. The funny thing is that the lack of knowledge about these things by many people grow to affect society at large. For example, the student loan is one of the biggest debt problems in the US right now.
Here are some of the subjects schools don’t teach and the real-world tests:
Schools don’t teach about money. They teach about math and do arithmetic, but no education about money and how it works. I believe the subject of money is just as important as basic arithmetics. After all, the arithmetics will be useful in the real world because of money.
You would be surprised at how many people won’t be using arithmetics in real life if not because of money. If that then is the case, why do we teach math in schools and not money?
What does it mean to teach money? First, to teach the history of money. With an ignorance about that history, people have preconditioned themselves to earn it. They become money’s slave just because they don’t understand it.
Also, schools need to teach today’s reality of money. This is the current state of money. Schools need to teach the thinking and ideology that shaped the current monetary system.
Schools need to teach about the banks and how the banking system works. They should teach about what central banks are and what they are capable of. In fact, I strongly believe they should teach about the basic economic cycles and how the financial system works. Schools should teach how loans work and how the credit card system works.
Everybody is going to deal with money. Everybody is going to get tested in the real world about the subject of money. Why do we refrain from teaching this important subject in school?
I know people study taxes as part of their profession. In fact, it is a specialized knowledge. But everything begins from the basics. Schools should teach a subject that educates about taxes. Everybody will have to deal with taxes one way or another.
Schools should teach the history of taxes. And the history of taxes is very interesting. If you haven’t studied it, I challenge you to do a study on it. The idea always begins with a politician or government official saying; let us take from the rich and help everybody else. And in the end, it becomes something everybody else pays except the rich.
Schools should also teach how taxation is done today. And then how the government spends money from taxes. And of course, the basic rules and regulations for taxes should also be taught.
I believe society will benefit from people making smarter choices when it comes to money and taxes.
I think schools should teach a subject on ‘dressing’. It doesn’t mean they teach how to dress. That would be subjective. But they should teach why different noble professionals dress the way they do. And they should break down the dress pattern of noble professionals. It definitely shouldn’t be on the basis of fashion though.
I think the history of dressing should also be taught. What people wore in different ages and why they dressed like that. Then, they can extend to how other cultures dress and the things that influence why they dress that way.
‘Dressing’ is something that often goes wrong when you allow people to just evolve into it. Everybody knows that people will address you with how you look if they haven’t met you before. Dressing speaks. Fewer people get that today. I believe it should be an important subject that everyone should learn in school.
I think society will be better off if everybody understands the theory behind dressing. It is not about teaching people how to dress. It is about making them understand dressing.
Whether you like it or not, criticism is now part of our society. With social media, it is now off the hook as anybody can criticize from anywhere. And with younger people trying enterprising things especially on the internet, people need to be taught criticism as a subject in school.
On the one hand, people should be taught how to give constructive criticism. On the other hand, they should be taught how to take criticism. If we, through practice from school, learn how to express criticism without pain and how to take it without feeling personally attacked, the quality of life will go up by several meters.
Schools already teach presentation and public speaking to an extent. They could incorporate criticism and spin it off as a subject of its own. This is because life would test this much more than anything else. And this could be very important in today’s society where young people are killing themselves because of what someone said.
Failure as a subject would be cool. To be honest, I would be one of the students who will hate the class initially. The school system trains us to dread failure. And this keeps us from taking chances in life. I think how to deal with failure would be an excellent exercise.
The goal of the class should be to teach the art of comeback after catastrophic failures. The lives of people who made great comebacks after failure should be studied. And students should be tested to bring out those instincts. This is so that when the real-life hits, there would be something to draw from.
6. How to make friends
In school, we teach language but we don’t teach communication. People grow up with this idea of themselves being able to do certain things and not being able to do others, based on personality. And it constitutes a very limiting belief.
In real life, people are always playing a character even when they are themselves. So why not teach how to communicate to blend into any new environment?
The world is fast becoming a global village. People are more likely to visit more countries and explore more cultures than ever before. And it is important to be able to make friends; understand other people and be understood. There are numerous nonverbal ways of communication that can be taught. I believe a subject can be created based on that.
The only issue is that if you call it ‘nonverbal communication class’, it won’t be interesting to students. But if you call it ‘how to make friends’, everybody will love the class.
7. Social media usage
I think we have gotten to the point where we need a subject on social media in school. This is not about teaching students how to use social media. They already know that. It is not about teaching them what social media can do for them. They also don’t need to be told that.
What schools need to teach is the boundaries and cautions of social media. The government has been imposing all kinds of restrictions on social media but it is evident that those big companies are empires of the virtual world. So, instead of trying to put more embargo on social media, why not just educate the users.
Privacy features should be taught in schools. The terms and conditions of those apps should be taught on the topics. Also, the hazards and dangers of social media. The implication of every content released and how content spreads across the internet. The history of all the social media apps, their remarkable achievements, and questionable pasts. This is the best way to check the social media trend and keep it from getting out of hand.
The school system hasn’t always had the subjects it has today. Everything got added at some point. I believe these subjects above deserve to be added. And in fact, some deserve to be added yesterday.
